Dr Dan Owen invited to University of Oxford

28th September 2022

Dr Dan Owen, our Director of Secondary Education, has been invited by Excluded Lives to join a panel of experts at their upcoming public seminar: 'Alternative Provision - Who is it for?'.

We are not surprised by Dan's invite to speak on such an important and emotive matter. A Cambridge University graduate, Dan has dedicated his life to education and helping young people. A former Senior Her Majesty’s Inspector for Ofsted, Dan led inspection policy and acted as special advisor for the 2019 framework as well as leading Ofsted’s work on ‘off-rolling’, bringing together Ofsted, the Department for Education and the Children’s Commissioner’s Office to improve the lives of marginalised students across England. Dan is very much looking forward to the seminar, he commented:

It's always a pleasure to be invited to be on discussion panels on alternative provision (AP). Over the past few years we have seen the Timpson Review, much discussion around off-rolling and an increased interest in those pupils on the margins of education. Now is a good time to open up a wider conversation about AP as we all work together to make sure that we do the right thing for our most vulnerable pupils.

is a multi disciplinary project which explores the different landscapes of exclusion and the experiences of the young people involved.  The seminar is being held on 06/10/22 at 4.30pm until 6.30pm at the University of Oxford's Department of Education and can be attended both online and in person. With over a week to go there are already almost 100 bookings including parents, school leaders and teachers from all types of education settings.
